finding web space

We do not provide web space but if you do not have a host already we can suggest competitive options. It is better to use one of the larger companies because they will be less prone to service interruptions.

If you want to have your site hosted on your own domain (you.co.uk or you.com etc) it can cost as little as £20 per year. Alternatively you can host your site for free with internet service providers like BT or NTL and have an address like homepage.ntlworld.com/you and use web forwarding to direct visitors from your domain name to this free space.

Free providers offer a basic service and are not very search engine friendly but if you are on a very tight budget they could be an option.

To help you choose, here are a few things to look for amongst the bewildering lists of features that hosting companies offer:

home/business standard/professional entry/starter
Whatever they choose to call it the lowest tariff a company offers is probably adequate. You can usually upgrade in the future if you need to.
Windows/linux servers
There are differences between the operating systems that hosts offer but they are probably not crucial (except that linux can be cheaper). It does not matter whether you use a PC or a Mac yourself.
webspace/bandwidth
Free providers place restrictions on the amount of space or traffic you can have but allocations are usually generous.
cgi
cgi is only necessary for features like order forms and shopping carts.
web statistics
Most hosts will offer visitor statistics. They are only useful if you take the time to analyse them.
FTP, ASP, perl, SSH, SSL, SQL, MySQL, FrontPage, telnet etc
You can safely ignore these exotic items.
support
It is always good to have 24/7 phone and email support, though it may not be totally satisfactory.
site submission
There is no harm in using free search engine submission if it is offered, but do not expect too much. It is not worth paying extra for it.
